The city of Clearwater in Florida’s Gulf Coast is located just northwest of Tampa.

This beach destination has more golf courses than you’d be able to play if you are on a short visit to the region.

The city has 7 golf clubs within its boundaries and each of these clubs has some of the best courses that range from private type to semi-private and public ones – affording golf for all ages and skill levels.

There are no resort or hotel-type golf courses in Clearwater, though.

Clearwater, part of Pinellas County, has a warm and temperate climate, typical of the region, and provides year-round playability.

As you can expect from a private facility, the course at Feather Sound Country Club offers a first-class golfing experience.

The course is built into the creeks and marshy grasslands abutting Tampa Bay with the course itself woven around lakes and water bodies making it a beautiful and challenging layout.

This is an 18-hole Par 72 signature championship golf course designed by Joe Lee with a slope of 137 and a rating of 74.3.

The fairways are wide and landing areas forgiving but the fast and elevated greens can mislead one into a stray shot and so require an accurate and strategic approach.

The 6100-yard course from the championship tees that can be stretched to 7000 yards, along with the 6 different sets of tees can provide enough challenges no matter where you are at with your skill levels.

The fairways and greens are exceptionally maintained as can be expected from a private club.

The club has a 7-acre driving range with a 7000 sq ft putting area with a bunker to hone your short game skills.

There are professional instructors available for individual lessons as well as for group clinics.

There are 3 types of golf memberships available – full, intermediate, and corporate.

The clubhouse can host private events – even to non-members too.

Chi Chi Rodriguez Golf Course – Municipal Course

This is a golf course with a purpose. They are trying to impact the lives of players by helping them balance their passion for the game with their day-to-day lives as well as giving back to the next generation through their youth foundation.

The course was built in 1989 and was designed by Denis Griffiths.

This is an 18 hole Par 69 course with a slope of 121 and a rating of 66.4 from the blue tees.

The course measures only 5450 yards from the back tees, so not for the long hitters.

The fairways are wide and forgiving, however, the 70 sand traps with water hazards on 12 out of 18 holes can make this a challenging one to play.

The course is also maintained decently for a public/municipal course.

One of the standouts of this course is its driving range that has 49 bays with 10,000 sq ft of grass that is also lit for a nighttime golf practice session.

The course also has a pitching and chipping area along with putting green for the short game.

The facility’s PGA professionals provide a variety of golfing instructions including individual sessions and private lessons.

The club has a pro shop but does not have a clubhouse or restaurant.

The morning tee time starts at 7:10 am with the last one at 5:00 pm.

The rates are $35 in the morning and $28 in the afternoon.

A Par 63 18-hole course – built in 1970 and designed by Ron Garl – underwent a renovation in 2010.

Measuring 4470  yards and with no par 5s, this is not a long hitters course. 

However senior players, beginners, and golfers who are short on time will find this course to be perfect for a round of golf.

The club has a driving range as well as short game practice areas and a pro shop.

Private and group golfing lessons are also available.

The green fees start at $28 for morning tee times with a cart and $24 for a walk.

The afternoon rates are $24 and $20 respectively.

The club also has a clubhouse where players can hang out.

Golf Course At Countryside Country Club – Bayhead, Lake & Pine

Three 9-hole golf courses – Bayhead, Lake, & Pine constitute the 27-hole course at the Countryside Country Club.

The courses were built in 1977 and redesigned by Gary Player in 1991.

This is a beautiful course with mature oak trees and palm trees scattered throughout. The fairways and greens are manicured and well maintained.

The course has a driving range as well as practice greens.

PGA professionals are at hand for golfing lessons and the club also has a pro shop.

Built in 1920 and designed by Herbert Strong, Clearwater Country Club is an 18-hole Par 72 course with a slope of 124 and a rating of 69.4.

Situated just minutes away from the Clearwater beach, the course is a patch of green that is enveloped by dense neighborhoods.

There is a creek that flows through the course and comes into play on 6 holes.

The course has fallen behind in terms of upkeep and has issues with the maintenance of fairways and greens which could be a temporary issue.

The course measures 6200 yards from the back tees and the layout can be a bit confusing for newbies.

The course has a driving range with a chipping and pitching area for the short game as well as a large putting green.

PGA professional instructors are available for golf lessons.

Walking is allowed as well a casual dress code is permitted.

Green Fees: The rates start at approximately $40 for 18 holes with a cart for morning tee times that are reduced to $30 for the afternoon. An option for 9 holes is also available at a rate of $30 in the mornings and $25 after two pm if you are short of time.

The club also has a pro shop with a banquet for hosting events.

The membership starts at $150/month for singles and $200/month for families. The club also provides for a 6-month seasonal membership.

Located along the picturesque and beautiful shores of Tampa Bay, Cove Cay Golf Club offers stunning and memorable views during a round of play.

The course that was built in 1972 and designed by David Wallace offers a par-70 18 holes with a slope of 130 and a rating of 70.4.

The course has a lot of water that comes into play – in 12 out of 18 holes with the 17th that runs along the bay offering the best views of the back 9’s – is also home to a lot of native Florida birdlife.

At 6080 yards from the back tees, the course is not really for the long hitters, but the tight fairways and strategic obstacles, along with the four sets of tees, provide enough challenging moments to both the novice as well as an experienced golfer.

The fairways and greens are fairly well maintained and the club owners head the golf academy at the club, and so are very much involved with the club activities.

The owners who are PGA professionals themselves along with other pros provide lessons and conduct clinics for both the beginner as well as advanced golfers.

The course has a scenic driving range as well as a chipping area and sand trap for short game practice as well as a putting green.

Fees: Starts at $37 for 18 holes and $24 for 9 holes with a cart, and the rates stay the same throughout the day.

The morning tee times start at 7:30 and end at 5:30 in the afternoon.

The full-service clubhouse along with a grill and bar hosts events and golf outings.
