What is a Refurbished Golf Ball? Is It Any Good?

By
January 8, 2024

A refurbished golf ball refers to a golf ball that has been previously put into play and used on a golf course but has now been cleaned, inspected, graded based on condition, and resold to offer golfers significant cost savings compared to buying only brand-new balls at full retail pricing.

Refurbished balls can vary widely in actual previous usage, wear, and visual condition depending on specific rating levels. But the refurbishing process aims to extend the life of quality balls.

What is a Refurbished Golf Ball

Range of Condition for Used Golf Balls

Refurbished golf balls will range from balls graded in “like new” condition with very minimal visible wear and almost no signs of play, to balls with heavily visible markings, scuffs, discoloration, or surface deterioration that reveal more extensive previous usage.

There can be quite a wide spectrum regarding how much play a refurbished ball saw before being recycled. Predicting durability and longevity depends heavily on the rating grade assigned during the inspection.

Cleaning Process to Prepare Used Balls for Refurbishing

Used golf balls purchased in bulk for refurbishing first undergo a thorough deep cleaning process using solutions and methods to remove all dirt along with tough embedded grass and mud stains, grease marks, and superficial surface scuffs or club face markings picked up during play.

Proper cleaning is an essential first step to remove debris and make the balls presentable again before inspection and grading can occur.

Careful Inspection and Grading of Each Ball

After the thorough cleaning process, each individual used golf ball goes through careful inspection and grading by trained personnel based on its condition.

Balls determined to have excessive damage, deep cuts or material deterioration are removed and discarded rather than resold.

The balls rated in the best condition with minimal signs of use become eligible for premium “mint grade” refurbished status.

Typical Grading Scale Used for Ranking Refurbished Balls

A common grading scale used by refurbished golf ball sellers to rate the used balls based on condition is AAA, AA, A, B and C grade levels from highest quality to lowest.

For example, AAA grade would signify balls showing virtually no visible signs of previous play or markings, while a C grade would exhibit heavy scuffs, discoloration, and deterioration revealing more extensive usage.

Refinishing Imperfections to Improve Appearance

Many used golf balls receive some light cosmetic refinishing during the refurbishing process to remove minor scuffs and abrasions on the outer cover.

Light sanding and buffing improve cover appearance so the balls look nearly new and flawless. Refinished balls offer excellent playability.

Substantial Lower Prices Compared to New Retail

The savings on buying refurbished AAA-grade used golf balls often range from 50% to 60% or more of the prices of brand-new balls at normal retail pricing from golf stores.

Even the lower condition C-grade refurbished balls are very inexpensive relative to new ones. Significantly lower pricing is the incentive for players to use recycled balls.

Testing Sample Balls From Each Batch

Reputable golf ball refurbishers will always test hit sample balls from each refurbished batch using club testing and launch monitors to verify the flight performance and durability match the expected rating grade prior to offering those balls for resale.

This validates the grading assigned during the inspection.

Normally Sold in Larger Quantities or Bulk Orders

To offer enhanced cost savings from volume pricing, refurbished golf balls are most often sold in larger bulk quantities of several dozen balls versus single sleeves.

Purchasing multiples of dozen refurbished balls provides golfers with even greater value.

May Exhibit Faded Logos From Prior Use

Since refurbished golf balls by definition have been used on golf courses before recycling, they will frequently exhibit some fading or wear on the printed manufacturer logos and markings.

While the performance remains very good, the external branding may be slightly less visible.

In summary, a refurbished golf ball provides quality flight performance and characteristics at a significantly discounted price by effectively recycling balls lightly used in play previously and preparing them for resale after a thorough cleaning and condition grading process.

They offer an environmentally friendly way to save.
