Tucked away at the edges of nature preserves and parks sits Umstead Pines Golf Course in Willowhaven, Durham, NC.
This is the only golf course in Willowhavaen and lies to the north of Durham.
The course is 42 minutes from Raleigh and 52 minutes from Greensboro.
The region has subtropical weather with hot and humid summers and cool winters and has a year-round golf season.
Umstead Pines Golf Club
Umstead Pines Golf was built in 1957 and was designed by George Cobb. It’s a semi-private club where the public has access to the daily-fee system without having to be a member.

The course has an old-school style layout and an interesting routing. The front nines are a bit cramped whereas the back is fairly spread out and long.
It’s challenging with a lot of doglegs and elevation changes. The fairways are wide and forgiving.
The greens are known to have a lot of slope and can roll a bit fast. Pin placement plays a big role here in how challenging the course can be.
The back nines are longer, overall, than the front nines and wind through the neighborhood and so prepare to walk a fair distance.
With a lot of doglegs and measuring 6442 yards, don’t expect to use the driver much. Irons and fairway woods can get the job done.
There are a lot of houses that line the fairways and so can’t spray the shots. Accuracy would come in handy here.
With 4 sets of tees, this is truly a fun and challenging course for all skill levels.

Driving Range
The facility has a small driving range for long-game practice as well as pitching and chipping areas and putting green for short-game practice.
Tee Times
Umstead Pines offers 45 tee time slots between the hours of 8 AM and 5 PM with 4 players in each slot. An option for 9 holes is also available.

Proper golf attire is required. Collared shirts are required. Jeans, tee shirts and shorts are not allowed.
